EddyAI™ High School labels every course on a transcript with a subject, such as Math, Science or Fine Arts. Those subjects decide which courses count toward your Core GPA. This article lists the subjects EddyAI™ uses, which ones count as core by default, and how to correct a subject when a course is filed in the wrong place.
How EddyAI™ assigns a subject
Most high school transcripts don't print a subject next to each course, so EddyAI™ works it out. For each course row, it:
- Cleans up the course title: expands abbreviations and removes noise, so "ALG I 3RD PD" is read as "Algebra I".
- Matches the title to a subject: uses the course name and the surrounding context on the transcript to pick one subject from a fixed list of ten.
- Shows the result on the Course List: your reviewers can see the subject and change it on any course row.
Every course gets exactly one subject. A course that doesn't clearly fit one of the academic subjects is filed as Elective.
The ten subjects
EddyAI™ picks from the same ten subjects for every institution. The last column shows whether a subject counts toward the Core GPA in the standard setup.
| Subject | Typical courses | Core by default? |
|---|---|---|
| English | English 9–12, American and World Literature, Composition, Creative Writing, Speech, Journalism | Core |
| Math | Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Statistics | Core |
| Science | Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science, Anatomy and Physiology | Core |
| Social Studies | World and US History, Government, Civics, Economics, Psychology, Geography | Core |
| Foreign Language | Spanish, French, German, Latin, Mandarin, American Sign Language and other world languages | Core |
| Technology | Computer Science, Programming, Web Design, Information Technology, Engineering, Robotics, CAD | Core |
| Fine Arts | Art, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Graphic Design, Band, Choir, Orchestra, Theatre | Elective |
| PE/Health | Physical Education, Health, Wellness, Sports Conditioning | Elective |
| Religion | Theology, Bible Studies, World Religions, Church History | Elective |
| Elective | Yearbook, Debate, Leadership, Business, Marketing, Accounting, Culinary Arts, and any course that doesn't fit another subject | Elective |
Core vs. elective subjects
In the standard setup, six subjects count as core:
- English
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- Foreign Language
- Technology
The other four, Fine Arts, PE/Health, Religion and Elective, are treated as electives. They stay on the transcript record and still count toward the cumulative GPA, but they are left out of the Core GPA.
Warning
"Elective" has two meanings here. Elective is one of the ten subjects (Yearbook, Business and so on). It is also the general term for any non-core subject. A Fine Arts course is not filed as Elective, but it is still left out of the Core GPA.
Where the core designation matters
A course's subject affects these calculated fields:
| Field | Which courses it uses |
|---|---|
| Recalculated cumulative GPA (unweighted and weighted) | Every course that counts toward the GPA, in any subject. Subject does not change whether a course is included. |
| Core GPA (unweighted and weighted) | Only courses in your institution's core subjects. If you use both Core GPAs, they share the same core list. |
| Subject GPAs | One subject each. Available for Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Foreign Language only. |
| Course counts by subject | All ten subjects can be counted, core or not, if your institution uses this tally. |
| Highest course reached in a subject | Available for Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Foreign Language. |
Settings your institution can change
The list above is the standard setup. Your institution chose its own settings during implementation, so your results may differ in these ways:
- Which subjects count as core: any of the ten subjects can be added to or removed from the core list. For example, some institutions leave Technology out, and some add Fine Arts.
- Advanced courses outside the core list: by default, only the subject decides. Your institution can choose to count every AP, IB and Dual Enrollment course as core, whatever its subject. With this setting on, AP Music Theory counts toward the Core GPA.
- Which subjects appear in your dropdown: your institution may show fewer than ten subjects. When a course's subject isn't on your list, it is filed as Elective or left blank, depending on your setup.
Tip
Not sure what your institution chose? Contact your EdVisorly implementation lead or submit a support request, and we'll send you your current core list and settings.
How to correct a course subject
If EddyAI™ files a course under the wrong subject, change it on the course row. Your correction is saved for that transcript and helps improve how EddyAI™ handles similar courses in the future.
1 |
Open the transcript record in EddyAI™ High School. |
2 |
Scroll to the Course List section |
3 |
Find the course row you want to correct. |
4 |
Select the correct value from the [Subject] dropdown on that row. |
5 |
Click [Save]. Check the GPA tab to confirm the Core GPA reflects the change. |
Note
Changing a course's subject is different from switching off its Include in GPA toggle. Use the subject to control whether a course counts as core. Use the toggle to take a course out of every GPA.
Frequently asked questions
Do elective courses count toward the cumulative GPA?
Yes. The core designation only affects the Core GPA. Elective courses still count toward the recalculated cumulative GPA unless your institution excludes them, or a reviewer switches off Include in GPA for that course.
Why is Technology core in the standard setup?
Computer science and engineering courses are academic courses at most institutions. Leaving them out drops coursework like AP Computer Science from the Core GPA. If your institution prefers to treat Technology as an elective, we can remove it from your core list.
An AP course isn't counting toward the Core GPA. Why?
By default, only the subject decides. An AP course in a non-core subject, such as AP Art History filed under Fine Arts, is left out. First check that the subject is correct. If your institution wants every AP, IB and Dual Enrollment course counted as core, ask us to turn that setting on.
Can we add a subject that isn't on the list?
No. EddyAI™ uses a fixed list of ten subjects. You can choose which of the ten appear in your dropdown and which count as core.
Why is there no Technology or Fine Arts subject GPA?
Subject GPAs are available for Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Foreign Language only. Technology and other subjects still count toward the cumulative GPA, and toward the Core GPA if they are on your core list.
